So I will be graduating with a masters this year. Since I am living at home, I anticipate spending an inordinate amount of money on a car that will ideally last me a super long time: a toyota.
The question? Taco or 4runner?
The comparison is a difficult one: The taco has a newer engine and ~1800lbs better towing capacity, but it’s a truck and to be frank I am not a truck guy. TBH I would rather an enclosed trunk and get a cheapo trailer for hauling shit.
The 4runner is a 4runner and makes the enthusiast me happy. Price is roughly the same for similarly equipped cars, so offroading goodies are the same. I could still decide for a lower trim but I kinda want the TRD in either case.
Basically: these are mostly the same, and I was hoping the taco would be more expensive to buy and essentially make the decision for me. Color me surprised. Don’t want to make a mistake I’d regret. If I go with the taco I am going to agonize over 1" of bed size too.

If you are keeping it for long why not wait for the next gen 4Runner with the new engine? That way you get the best of both worlds. Also the Tacoma seems to have great resale value so you could get one and then sell it if it doesn’t fit your needs.

4runner is cooler and better looking.
It looks quite legit, unlike the tacoma

If brand new, Taco. If last generation or further back, 4runner

The only problem is that my mini needs replaced before it costs me big. Otherwise I would wait for the probable 2019 4runner redesign. If I buy a temp car I will get killed on the trade-in for only a year ownership.

I don’t plan on selling it longterm- although I could always lease a taco until the new 4runner comes out.

Putting wet things in the back? Taco with a canopy is hard to beat. 4Runners are nice but a dcsb with a canopy will give you the most flexibility.
If bikes and boats are involved it’s Tacoma easy- also if any towing is happening.
Also every mod out there is available for the Taco- most are 4Runner also but there are still more Tacos out there.

Plan: Taco until the next gen of the 4Runner comes out and then trade it in (because Taco depreciation curve) on the 4Runner. Unless of course the next generation of 4Runner decides to be a crossover instead of a 4Runner.

I would use an enclosed trunk way more than a bed, although I would like to get a car trailer.

Tacoma because that’s how the JKM truck saga ended.

Really can’t make a bad choice. Both excellent cars. Go with whatever makes most sense to you.

Drive both. If you aren’t a truck guy, the ride of Tacoma might not appeal to you. I really like both though, so whichever choice you make, you’re getting a nice vehicle. I tried to talk my wife into the 4Runner instead of the Grand Cherokee. The Jeep was a little more comfy for her.
As far as enclosed trunk, that’s pretty much what I have now. My cover is lockable. I bought it for my road trip and it’s by far the most useful (for me) thing I’ve done to the truck.

Student debt. Easier to make payments on a car than a house.

Payments is payments, sliced either way. Going back I would have rather saved more than dump the $15k into my Jeep building it up like a madman when I got my first real job after graduating.

Rent? You can’t eat the elephant in one bite. Baby steps. Crawl before you can walk. That’s all the unhelpful cliches I can come up this early in the morning.

Do you *need* a car? I mean, do you not currently have one and is it a necessity to getting you to and from work? If the answer to both of those is “yes,” then go out and buy a used Civic or Corolla. That’ll enable you to make larger payments to your student loan debt and/or increase your savings.
Then, you can use that saving to move out of your parent’s house. You’re an adult, it’s time to have your own place.
Once you’ve moved out, then if your budget allows, get yourself something fun to drive.
I’d be so pissed if I was kind enough to let my adult child live at home and they blow their income on unnecessary stuff.

Yes I need a car. My mini worth ~$6500 is going to need a $3k clutch job at 60k miles (according to the internet) and fuck that. I like living at home, and my mom doesn’t want me to move out. The way work should be for me I can buy this car and still have all my student loans paid off in two years, so I am not keen on paying for rent/utilities/food/ect just so I can be all alone.

well I could dump money into my trans am, but instead I am buying a brand new car with a warranty that should last 15 years.
